The holiday season brings
with it the tradition of sharing and
caring for others. The ElderHelp Holiday
Angels Program was created several years
ago to assure seniors living alone,
without families, frail and homebound,
received a friendly holiday visitor
bearing a gift or food basket. For many
it is the first gift they have received
in years, others have no one to visit
them at this special time of year.
Holiday Angels is supported
by community donors - individuals, families,
corporations, service organizations
and employee groups that create gift
baskets, purchase grocery gift certificates
or special gifts the senior needs, but
cannot afford. Gifts are delivered throughout
the holidays by volunteers and staff,
and most recently, by UPS drivers who,
with their families, deliver truckloads
of presents, holiday trees and plants.
The thank you letters
from grateful seniors are heartwarming.
The eldest senior receiving gifts this
year was 103 and the depth of her appreciation
was heartwarming. One senior who only
had his dog to celebrate with, was overjoyed
to receive a large basket filled with
gifts and treats and his 4 legged friend
was remembered with a basket too! Many
gift recipients said it was the best
holiday they had had in years. Those
volunteers who donated or delivered
gifts felt the holiday spirit as they
did something special and brought happiness
to lonely homebound seniors.
