The Essence of Life Awards program
is an annual celebration of the
lifetime achievements of outstanding
older adults. Recipients are chosen
by members of the public for their
long history of community involvement
and leadership. The event draws
over 400 local businesses, social
and political leaders as well as
the friends, family and business
associates of each honoree.The Essence
of Life program was designed to
demonstrate that individuals continue
to make important contributions
to their communities regardless
of age. Support of this event demonstrates
your commitment to San Diego’s
growing senior population. |

Ruth
Hayward |
| Engineer, sculptor,
community leader, and Olympic Torch
Bearer, Ruth is all of these. Active
in community work during her distinguished
career at General Dynamics, she
continues to stay involved, focusing
on the homeless, the environment,
and wildlife preservation. She has
been honored by The Society of Women
Engineers and the YWCA for her contributions
to her profession and her community.
Ruth’s art graces Balboa Park,
Rachel’s Women’s Center,
Scripps Green Hospital, and the
U.S. Postal Center. |
 |
Ralphine
Greaves |
| It has always
been about the children, and her
commitment to their welfare that
has defined Ralphine’s volunteerism.
For more than 50 years, through
her work with Children’s Hospital,
Boys and Girls Aid, the Salvation
Army, and a host of other organizations,
she has helped provide health care,
education and stable family lives
for San Diego’s children.
Not surprisingly, of all her community
awards, she is most proud of the
one she received from Children’s
Hospital in recognition of her work
on behalf of children. |
 |
Ed
Fletcher |
| In his 36-year
career as an educator, Ed saw his
share of controversy. He never ran
from it, but met it head on, developing
and battling for innovative programs
that created safe, healthy, and
nurturing environments in which
children could flourish. When he
is not on his daily five-mile run,
Ed remains involved in community
work and education programs. His
awards from ARC, Boys and Girls
Club, and the County of San Diego
reflect his lifelong commitment
to education, health care, and his
community. |

Reverend
George Walker Smith |
| “Faith,
not fear, should control our actions.”
These words, forged long ago, have
guided the Rev. George Walker Smith
throughout his life. Pastor of Christ
United Presbyterian Church for 44
years, founder of the Catfish Club,
and a powerful community force,
Rev. Smith has worked tirelessly
to ensure that equal education and
opportunities are available to all.
Honored for his outstanding community
service, he is the recipient of
the Mayor’s Special Commendation
and Black History Month’s
Lifetime Achievement Award. |
 |
Bruce
Moore |
| Bruce began
his volunteer career when he was
12 years old and he is still at
it. Through his community involvement,
he has worked to better the lives
of children and families, foster
a healthy business climate, make
health care available, and bring
world-class sporting events to San
Diego. He is a recipient of the
Courageous Leadership Award and
the YMCA Distinguished Service Award.
This longtime business leader and
two-time world domino champion continues
on the volunteer path he began 69
years ago. |
