Aging as Ourselves is designed
to improve access by lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender (LGBT) seniors to appropriate
health care and social services. While
many of the concerns of LGBT seniors align
with those of other seniors, LGBT seniors
face numerous barriers to accessing the
services and support systems that promote
successful aging in our society. Aging
as Ourselves is designed to improve the
ability of senior health and social service
providers to serve LGBT seniors and to
increase the delivery of LGBT-friendly
health and social services for seniors.
Aging as Ourselves evolved from a needs
assessment survey conducted in 2003
by the Alliance Healthcare Foundation
with support from The California Endowment,
which assessed the health care needs of
LGBT seniors in San Diego County. The
findings from this study support the growing
consensus among local providers that LGBT
seniors have special needs and suffer
barriers to care.
