REACHING OUT TO OUR SENIORS WITH R.U.O.K. CALLS
ElderHelp makes R.U.O.K. calls that include checking in with our isolated seniors and asking, “aRe yoU OK?” It may seem simple but for a senior this can be a lifeline. It begins with a phone call and if the senior answers, we make sure they are ok. It’s when the senior doesn’t answer that things change. We may call a neighbor, a friend, or a family member to check on the senior and it’s always a relief when we hear that they are ok. On occasion, we are faced with calling the San Diego Police to do a welfare check. Sometimes we find out that a senior has fallen or passed on. A simple R.U.O.K. phone call can make all the difference to a senior in need. Here’s a story about how one of our R.U.O.K. calls touched the life of a senior, wheel chair bound, isolated, and a veteran who served our country…
We called Mr. Rice to check in as part of our R.U.O.K. program. He was in good spirits and asked me to please thank a volunteer who delivered a Valentine’s gift to him. During their visit, Mr. Rice described his time in the military and how proud he is of his service. Knowing that he will not live forever, he shared how he made arrangements at the new Miramar Cemetery. Being wheel chair and house bound, he mentioned to the volunteer that he would probably never see the cemetery before he passed.
A few days went by and Mr. Rice received his mail like he does every day. Expecting the usual bills, he noticed one letter standing out from the rest. To his surprise, the volunteer had sent him several pictures of the new Miramar Cemetery. Mr. Rice was not only touched by the volunteer’s gesture but at peace knowing where his resting place would be. It was truly an emotion that he could not describe. Mr. Rice said to please thank the volunteer and…make sure you call me tomorrow.
A phone call can make the difference in tomorrow!
