ElderHelp Members visit the Timken Museum

Four members, two staff and one volunteer visited the Timken Museum and experienced a wonderful day in Balboa Park. We met at the Prado where we enjoyed a cup of coffee and chatted with new friends from ElderHelp.

We were  greeted by a docent who led our group on a tour of the museum and shared the history of two sisters who had “a desire to share their extraordinary European art collection with San Diego residents and visitors”. In the early 1900s, Amy and Anne Putnam moved to San Diego from Vermont where they “spent decades acquiring European old master paintings”.

The works in the Putnam Foundation Collection are primarily in three distinct areas: European old master paintings, 18th and 19th-century American art, and Russian icons. Each collection boasts unique and priceless representations of the specific genre. Notable works in the collection include Rembrandt’s Saint Bartholomew (the only painting by the Dutch artist on view in San Diego); Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Parable of the Sower; John Singleton Copley’s portrait of Mrs. Thomas Gage; Eastman Johnson’s classic The Cranberry Harvest, Island of Nantucket; and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s View of Volterra.

One member said, “I’m not a morning person but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to come to Balboa Park.” She told me stories about the times she visited the park when she was younger and even graduated high school in Balboa. Everyone was so happy to have the opportunity to spend a morning together enjoying coffee in the park and touring the wonderful museum.

The Timken Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday. Admission is always free.
